Plastic Art Stencils

Plastic Art Stencils are durable, wash-clean plastic and easy to use for tracing, but they have many others purposes too.  The stencils come with the center punch out section, so the preschooler and primary student can either trace inside the open stencil or around the solid piece.  Once the pieces have been punched out, the stencil serves a dual purpose--stencil and puzzle. For an added challenge, children can toss all of the pieces from six stencils in one pile and then try to sort out the pieces to place back in the stencil, puzzle fashion.

These punched out pieces can be used for sorting by color and by classification.  They also can be used for counting practice.  Stencils play value is in developing fine motor control, an important skill in preschool and the primary grades where children are using fine motor control to learn to write letters.

These stencils can be purchased as a set of six or two.  The sets include farm animals; transportation set, including a bus, plane, sail boat, and car; family; zoo animals; outdoor nature;  and sea animals.  The stencils can be used to illustrate stories, note cards, stationery, scrapbooks, or collages.  Once the outline has been drawn, the young artist can decorate the outline with colored pencils, crayons, felt markers,  water colors or diluted poster paint.  These objects, familiar and popular with young children, also serve to develop language and shape discrimination.

Stencil activity and other arts and crafts benefit the preschooler and primary school child by teaching important character qualities.  Tracing stencils may not be the most creative activity, but it teaches fine motor skills and concentration.  The child learns to focus on holding the stencil still, not letting it slip, and tracing carefully around or inside the shape.

Doing stencil projects helps kids learn to observe details and to describe what they have produced.  After drawing some stencil shapes, the child can tell the teacher or a parent what they have drawn and what is happening in the scene.  The stencil scene could even develop into a creative story.  On the other hand, the child could start by telling the teacher a story about a zoo animal, and then go on to decorate the story with stencil pictures.

When children do arts and crafts projects they learn that there is more than one right way to do something.  If their ideas do not work out the first time, they can try another method or procedure and hope for better results next time.
