Vinyl Lettering for Walls Home Business
Vinyl lettering for walls is a fast growing home based business with very little start up cost and very little space required. We started our vinyl lettering business in October of 2008 and invested about $900. We bought an economy vinyl cutter (you don't need an expensive one, trust me), sometimes known as a vinyl plotter. We already had a computer we could use to control the cutter. We bought 10 colors of Oracal 631 interior vinyl. Buy your vinyl in 15" wide for now. Our most popular colors are black, dark brown, dark red, signal yellow, traffic blue, pink, light pink, cream, white, dark grey and lime tree green. You will also need some transfer tape, we use TransferRite Ultra high tack. Buy it in 16" wide as this will cover completely your 15" wide vinyl.
Now that you have your tools you need to get some designs. I am not a graphic designer at all. I bought all of my designs for very cheap (under $1 per design). Do a search on Google for "vinyl ready designs" and check out the top four results and find a package of designs that you like. Just buy one medium or large package for now. Be careful it's easy to over buy designs at this point, so if you are budget is tight only buy one package.
The best way to get started with designs is to show friends and family. If you want you can sell to them at a discount. To price our designs we use the following formula. Take the width (in inches) and multiply it by the height (in inches). Divide this number by 144 (this gets you the square inches) and multiply this by 13. For friends we usually multiply by 9 or 10.
Another good way is to get a booth in a craft fair. These booths are usually pretty cheap and can bring you a lot of future business. We hit a Christmas fair shortly after starting up and were able to make back almost 50 % of our investment. Don't just sell vinyl stickers, make up some colored wooden plaques and put vinyl on them. You can also sell wooden block kits with letters spelling family. Do some research online and you will find tons of ideas for crafts using vinyl. Last name plaques are really popular. Put a name like Smith (use the name of a friend or relative so you can give it to them as a gift later) in one color and put in small letters in a contrasting color "established in 2006" (the year they were married).

How can I join two pieces of marine vinyl?
I need a large piece of marine vinyl, but the craft stores only sell them at 54" wide. So I would like to buy several pieces and mend them together. It has to be water proof and in the end I would like it to look like one piece.
Is there a way of sewing or melting the two pieces together?
Yes, you can sew them together. The seam will be evident.
If you want seamless, buy the length you need -- so if you need, say 9x72", instead of buying 1/2 yard of 54" inch wide vinyl and cutting two 9" strips and seaming them together, buy 2 yards, and cut a strip 9" wide down the selvage. (you'll find a use for the rest of it!)
