One good place to look is to go to the website of the American Philatelic Society - http://www.stamps.org - and choose "dealers". Any dealer who is a member of APS should be considered trustworthy. If you join APS (HIGHLY recommended) you can also buy stamps at http://www.stampstore.org . prices are very good.
For general stamp collecting fun, join the Virtual Stamp Club! http://www.virtualstampclub.com - it's free, and you can look at the message board and read the articles first without joining. Free membership is required if you want to post on the message board. If you ask about dealers in a specific area (Russian stamps 1930-50, for example), folks there will be able to steer you to dealers who sell what you want to buy.
