Internet usage monitored at work?
I work in a huge facility that has at least 1000 computers in it. Internet usage is supposedly logged. Certain sites get stopped through the web sense program - tasteless, sexual, personals and dating, internet storage (which is like photobucket), lingerie, etc - will have a time stamp on the error message 5 hours ahead of us and state that internet traffic is being logged.
How does this type of usage monitoring work? Is there someone sitting there individually monitoring how many times someone goes onto the weather web site or is it typically just restricted sites they are looking for? Are they storing cookies on some remote computer 5 time zones away or am I erasing my internet usage every time I clear my cookies, temp files and history?
They might be using a proxy server. There's alot of details as what this is but basically it's a network setup so that internet data has to pass through one computer before it passes through your computer.
So for example whatever you surf on the internet will be logged on your bosses computer since the internet data is going through his computer before yours.
Many school networks are setup like this so they can check what the students are doing on the internet.
Hackers also use proxy servers to cover up their ip addresses. Since only the ip address of the first computer is recorded when they use the internet. So if the hacker uses a proxy server in china it only leads law enforcement pointing to china when they try to track his computer.
