On the tramp stamp thing?
Does anyone know the origins of calling tattoos on women, "tramp stamps"? I know nowadays its mostly used in reference to the lower back, but some people consider any tattoos a women has tramp stamps.
I am a straight A college student at one of the top colleges in the country and far from being one who sleeps around, but guess what? I have a tattoo, and am getting more. Most people I know with tattoos are similar.
A study was done way back in the 70s that showed only about 1% of tattooed people are outlaws/convicts, even then before they were so widespread. So where does this belief come from, and why is it still prevalent?
First off, the church tried to make tattoos bad, when the original explorers came back from places like Fiji and so on, where tattoos are a part of their belief system, the church tried to make tattoos the sign of the devil, simply because they were associated with the 'heathens', the 'poor misguided souls', that were supposedly under the sway of the devil because they hadnt heard of christianity.
Then it was sailors of various employment who had tattoos mostly, momentoes of their voyages, so most women who had tattoos were the women of dubious virtue who serviced the sailors (prostitutes). And of course, sailors and prostitutes arent the best behaved people in the world, so tattoos are bad yet again.
Some cultures tattooed or branded criminals, so everyone knew to be cautious of that person.
Tattoos or the process of getting one feature heavily in some religions, or as coming of age ceremonies, always 'heathen' beliefs.
More recently, it tattoos are associated with bikies and street gang members having tattoos as identifying marks.
And who can forget, goths and other teenage subcultures, that focus on rebeling on the clean cut standards that most seem to think is required in society.
The difference between a tattooed person and a cleanskin, a tattooed person doesnt care if you dont have a tattoo.
I know that statement is gonna rile some people, and it doesnt apply to all cleanskins, but its true, tattooed people dont care if you dont have one.
