Have you ever heard the expression let's barter for services? Probably not recently, but…
The Barter System (bartering) has been in use throughout the world for centuries. Bartering is a great tool, it was most popular and the primary way of doing business before money was invented. During ancient times, bartering was used by people in the same locality because they did not have the same resources as we do today.
The invention of money did not result in the end of bartering services, but bartering was not the primary way of doing business any longer. It was still sometimes used by individuals or businesses that were not financially sound. As was found through the years sometimes monetary crises fueled the revival of the Barter System. For instance, bartering for services became popular again during The Great Depression, in the 1930's, which witnessed a scarcity of money. The Barter System was used as a way of obtaining things like food and other services.
With the current recession, it has once again set a stage for its comeback with the advent of more sophisticated techniques that aid trading through the Internet. However, today's bartering system has become global. It has now become strong and organized and now involves anywhere from people on a one-on-one basis, to small businesses to large corporations and then even between countries to get the goods or services needed without the exchange of money.
Are you interested in bartering? We've been bartering since we were children and may not even realize it. Remember trading lunches or baseball cards as a child? Or as in my time, trading scratch and sniff stickers? I'm not trading lunches or stickers anymore, but even today I utilize the Barter System. I find bartering for all sorts of things; like getting my hair done, pedicures, massages, fresh orchid arrangements and even business services like accounting, etc. very rewarding.
How to start your own barter system? First, what service(s) or good(s) do you have and are willing to barter that might be of interest to others? Second, what service(s) or good(s) would you like to receive? Once you have figured these two things out, then you can look for persons or businesses that are also interested in bartering.
The most useful tool is the internet with local and global websites. These websites offer bartering for service(s) or good(s). You can even post ads saying what you are looking to barter; talk to friends and family to see if they know anyone who may be interested or you can even do it the "old fashion" way and call around. I would start with small businesses since they may be more willing to do bartering.
The Barter System is a great tool that people will be using for many years to come.
