Scrapbooking as a Family Activity
Scrapbooking is a past time I haven't really picked up, but that my Mother has yet to put down. It amazes me how much time and effort goes into every little page- countless hours of planning, shopping, re-organizing, printing, painting, cutting, clipping, gluing, and sharing. My Mother has an entire room in her house dedicated to scrapbooking supplies for her to craft her masterpieces. Multiple pieces of custom scrapbook furniture line the walls, with custom scrapbook supply holders all over, drawers stuffed to the brim, pieces hanging, and yet everything is completely organized and lacking chaos.
You see, not only is my Mother a scrapbooker, but her husband is an artist in his own right. He crafts, out of love, every piece of scrapbook furniture that she needs. When he noticed her struggling to complete her scrapbooks on the small computer desk they had, he went to work in the garage molding a 5 foot table specifically for her room- Beautifully stained and meticulously assembled, it is a work of art that would cost hundreds of dollars in any store.
When he noticed her scrapbook supplies piling up all over the place, filling the floors and perched on top of every cabinet, he went to work yet again. Devising storage devices of all types- Hangers, drawers, flat files, separators, and more. Now, my Mother, the scrapbooker extraordinaire, knows exactly where every piece of material, every sticker, every ribbon, every page, and every picture she owns can be found on a moments notice. If inspiration strikes, she can instantly start crafting. There is a certain level of confidence and beauty behind someone who sacrifices so much of their time to create memories that will last for generations.
Every time a page is complete we are sure to be shown; "Some day your grandkids will have this," she says. It's as if our family history is being sown into the pages of her books to never be forgotten, and everyone knows it. Scrapbooking for us has become more than a one woman show- It is a celebration of the family and everything that we do, infused with the understanding that long beyond our time, those who we loved will be looking upon the pages with smiles, remembering us for who we were, and reliving the moments that brought us the most joy, knowing that our family lived well, loved better, deeply appreciated every moment we were given to enjoy each others company.
