Using The Computer With A Mouse Pad
If you have been using the mouse in your computer without using a mouse pad then you put a little more concern about the function of your mouse. This is because it can be a little bit harder if you are using the mouse without mouse pad. My experience can attest to this. I used to be a person who doesn't use the mouse but after experiencing a few inconveniences, I decided to get myself a new mouse pad and I was able to use my computer smoothly. One of the main functions of a mouse pad is to accentuate the use of your computer mouse. If you have been using the computer mouse for a long time you might notice that it can get dirty right away if you are not using a mouse pad. This is true especially for ball mice. Way back in the early days, I used to use a ball mouse so I always have a mouse pad ready beside me. Right now, I am using an optical mouse but it is not a good excuse for not using a mouse pad. This is because an optical mouse can still get dirty without a good mouse pad. Aside from that, an optical mouse will not work well without the use of a mouse pad. This is because an optical mouse needs to have its light go passing through objects that are solid and a little bit rough. I actually bought my optical mouse years ago and I had to figure out why it was not working very well. One of the things I learned is that I should be using a mouse pad. So, I decided to get myself one and I was able to make my computer mouse function optimally.
Have you heard of mouse pads with foam? They are the new type of mouse pads that can help you prevent wrist injury from occurring. They can either be made up of ordinary foam or gel. If you have some extra money, I would suggest that you get yourself one of those because they can really help. In my experience, they can help me work on my computer for a long period of time without getting my right hand tired. This is what I like about using a mouse pad that has a foam in it. This means that using a mouse pad can also help you prevent any injuries and maximize the use of the computer mouse. Now let us talk about getting mouse pads that have personalized design. I am talking about a star wars mouse pad or something similar. This is good because you can make your computer table look good and then use the mouse and feel good about your computer accessories. One of the things that has motivated me to get my own personalized mouse pad design is that I was always envious of my friends who have personalized computer accessories and I just wanted to get myself one. I decided to get a cool mouse pad design over the Internet and have it delivered into my house. I also tried making my own design and I was very happy about it. There actually ways you can do to get yourself a custom designed mouse pad. The first one is to buy yourself one from a local computer store or simply make your own. Just choose which one is more convenient for you and you are good to go.

Artist & Designers: Which do you prefer when working with art on the computer: mouse or drawing pad/stylus?
I've always used the mouse and I can use it well, but I've been curious about getting a tablet & stylus, because it seems it might be more intuitive when it comes to painting and illustrative projects.
But I think the mouse would still be best for vector-based artwork and page layout, plus a good size tablet it expensive.
Any insight and perspective would be helpful. Thanks.
Personally, I would opt for a pen tablet. It gives me more control over the mouse, especially for digital imaging and illustrations. The mouse works fine with the "pen" tool in photoshop, flash and illustrator.
But when it comes to precision masking and pressure control, the tablet rules it all. I am currently using a WACOM graphire(approx. A6) at home and it is quite affordable these days.
On the other hand, I also use a WACOM intous 3(12" x 19.2") at the office but that will set you back more than US$500. But then, the large space gives you more comfort and precision at doing selections and fine strokes of the brush.
Think of the tablet as a good investment for the artist/designer. In the long run, the tablet would earn you back the money through all the wonderful design that churns out from the tip of stylus pen. 
Prices of Wacom tablets have increased since last year but you may want to check out stores that sell slightly older models of the tablets at a lower price(you can get an older graphire under US$100).

I choose Wacom over other brands because it's easier to get nib/part replacements and they provide free delivery for the parts right to my doorstep.
