Why do people on facebook (you) add extra letters to the ends of words?

I've seen people do it for more than emphasis: Example:
I'veeee seeennnn pppeoppllee doo ittt.... you get the point. It's annoying to read but I guess it's just a fad, the virtual equivalent of drawing circles (or hearts!) instead of dots on the letter "i"s.
