Theory: Human pregnancy is supposed to last one year...?
So I remember hearing about a theory that human pregnancy is supposed to last approximately one year, and I was hoping that someone could tell me from whom this theory originated.
I think the theory mentioned something about our hip placements - which help us walk fully upright - not allowing for pregnancies to last over about 40 weeks, and newborns being the most needy in the first 3 months.
Just really curious who came up with the theory since it's pretty interesting.
I heard about this theory when I was studying and what I remember is that it is a 2-part theory:
The first part has to do with the fact that we walk upright and as such cannot birth the size a baby would be at 12 months pregnant (as you mentioned). Our pelvises just wouldn't be able to open up wide enough.
The second part has to do with the size of the brain vs the body. Babies cannot grow both their brains and bodies at the same time due to the amount of energy each requires to grow. The size our brain needs to grow to, it would not be practical for the mother be able to carry a child with the size of the head. So the brain only functions with basic instincts like crying and feeding but not much else so that the body can grow while in the womb. As we are social creatures, it enables us to care for our young while they are so useless unlike other animals which leave their young to fend for themselves.
So basically: A baby will be born early so that the size of the brain can develop better outside the womb to make us into the supposedly intelligent and upright walking creatures that we are. It's all a compromise. Useless baby for 3 months to become highly intelligent adult later on.
I have no idea who came up with the theory but I do agree that it is very interesting
