Credit Card Fine Print You Need to Know

Credit card offers are always full of fine print that people tend to just skim through, and not really read from start to end. While it is understandable that the really small font and long terms and conditions can make anyone's head spin, it is still not an excuse if you end up with a credit card you truly do not want.

The truth though, is that even if you read through the entire thing, chances are that you will not understand all of the things said because it is written in legalese. To make it easier for ordinary people, listed below are some of the key points you just really need to know:

  • Annual fee - Some credit cards waive annual fees for promotional offers. Find out if there really is no annual fee for that specific credit card, or if it is just for the first. Of course, you also need to know exactly how much the annual fee is and by how much it can go up each year.
  • Annual percentage rate (APR) - The APR listed in credit card offers is the effective annual percentage rate, which is the total annual interest rate for the year. This includes the monthly rate/fee plus the compound interest rate. There are different APRs for credit card purchases and balance transfers. Find out the APRs for each. More often than not the best credit cards have zero APRs for purchases. Note though that the zero interest rate is only if you pay for the credit card purchase within a certain duration, which is usually anywhere from 3 month to a year. This duration is called the grace period, which is another thing you really should know by heart.
  • Transaction fees - Transaction fees are levied for almost everything, from balance transfers to cash advances. Know how much these fees are and when they will be charged.
  • Penalties - Fees are also charged for late payments and exceeding the credit limit. The good thing about this is that they are avoidable, but in case you do make a late payment or do anything that will incur a penalty, it is best to know beforehand how much you can expect to be charged.
  • Privacy Policy - While the privacy policy is not really a big problem, since banks and card providers take them very seriously, it is still important to know their policy and read the measures they take to protect your personal details.

What does the fine print on this coupon mean?

Written on the coupon: "we will reimburse you the face value of this coupon plus 8 cents handling provided you and the consumer have complied with the terms of the offer. "

Is this info for me or the cashier?
Thanks:)

The manufacturer who issued the coupon will reimburse the grocery store for the value of the coupon, plus 8 cents for their trouble. (Generally, too, they want proof that the store sold the merchandise.)
Coupons are a major hassle for grocery stores, but they tolerate them because they bring customers into the store, where they tend to by more than just the items for which they have coupons.
