Different Types of Industrial Ink Jet Printers
Industrial ink jet printers offer a range of printing capabilities from single-line messaging to complex codes combining text, logos and bar codes and 2D DataMatrix codes. These marks and codes are often used to provide traceability and security against forgery in many industries including food, beverage and pharmaceuticals.
Continuous ink jet printers (CIJ), one type of industrial ink jet printers, mark and code industrial applications like pouches/flexible packaging, personal care products, food processing, beverage containers, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In continuous ink jet printers, pressurized streams of inks constantly circulate while solvents keep the ink's viscosity stable. These streams of ink, once broken up into drops, are deflected by the printhead to a precise position on the product.
Using continuous ink jet, printed characters are made up of individual ink drops. The feed motion of the product is used to spray the numbers or letters one after the other onto the product. This is a non-contact process; the printhead does not touch the product. Today, this method of marking is used most often to print expiration dates, like those found on yogurt containers and beverage bottles. Various inks are available for printing on porous and non-porous surfaces.
Small character inkjet printers provide direct, non-contact coding of variable data on the surface of industrial mass-produced products. Using continuous ink jet, these codes can be applied with small font sizes (generally up to 12 mm) and are ideal for printing logos, standard bar codes, and other variable data. From high to very high speeds and with font sizes from 0.6 to 12 mm, small character inkjet printers are available to suit a wide range of industrial utilization needs.
Large character printers employ either impulse jet or valve jet technology. Impulse jet print heads were originally developed for the office printer market. They are now in general use and achieve outstanding results in office environments as well as in production environments where operating conditions are more difficult to control. Valve jet printers, generally used for marking secondary packaging and box coding, offer low resolution dot matrix printing.
Thermal ink jet coding systems are also considered industrial ink jet printers. They are typically used to mark products and outer packaging directly with variable data like dates, batch codes, and bar codes. Running at speeds up to 200 fpm, thermal ink jet printers are ideal for marking varnish-free surfaces on folded chipboard boxes and other paper substrates.
