Designing cards and getting them produced easily
Just like babies, online print is a growing business and it is the sites themselves that have become totally focused on niche markets. Niche markets like personalised stationers seem to be getting more attention. The ability to allow a customer to come to a site and create a customised design makes the customer more involved in the process and is therefore more inclined to purchase the product as it is now part theirs.
The design, layout, images and text has been presented to the reader as the customer or potential sender would like it to be. With websites now allowing customers to create cards from scratch how do you make the customers feel confident to design it and allow the website print it? I think the main part of the process is to present a selection of design templates that prompt the customer to take these as a starting point and customise it to their exact liking. The website designer has to take on a strategy for each card category. A basic strategy has to be thought out to cover the maximum options within the minimum designs allowing customers to find a satisfactory design. It is imperative that the selection of templates spans the complete spectrum of possible design concepts that will spark positive thoughts with the customer. So for example, if you want to design a card for a christening you might look at as many iconic images that could be used for such a card, iconic images such as a stork, a baby, a cross and so on.
You might also consider other religions to expand the market reach. You then have to consider typeface. You need to create a series of templates that also will span the typefaces and colour options that are liked by the majority of people. It is important to present the minimum amount of fonts and colours to enable an easy selection by the customer. Too many options only lead to a longer decision making process and can eventually lead to a lost sale. Once the category is finalised whilst applying the above guidelines you will find that more orders will occur. Making it easy to select a preferred card is the first main step in obtaining a good end result. From this point on it is imperative that the design choices made available to the customers will always work no matter what the customer?s final content is. The design constraints put in place should always guide the customer to a great result. You should also present a suggested final layout which will help the customer see what can ultimately be obtained within the parameters and will also display the product which will aid sales.
You have to remember that you will not be present when a customer is going through the design process and therefore it is going to benefit both to you and them to make the process easy. Once a design has been selected you should keep each subsequent decision to a minimum. Present information clearly and colour code elements that make it more intuitive to the user. Be precise with your wording throughout the process so there will be no ambiguity. Make all prompt messages using the least amount of words in order to speed up the process, and finally get your site tested by people who are not involved in the sites development, this will expose any issues that your design team did not foresee.
