And from what I've read (and assumed), the answer seems clear: responsible breeders who have been properly trained in genetic manipulation to insure a mostly healthy lineage.

So if (if!) one is interested in such a new (ish) mini breed, where do I find the club of "properly trained breeders" that will be happy to take my financial contribution to their cause? Or are there certain certifications one looks for to see if a breeder is trained in finding (and using) the rightly responsible methods?

Guess it seems like breeds work as insurance/quality control. You just want confidence that you and your pup will be a happy (and healthy!) match. Right?

If there is a clear need for a specific trait in a dog that isn't being met by the 'standard' sized dog of said breed, if the temperament qualities might be better served in a smaller or larger specimen, if several breeders (not just one!) can get together and develop a NEW physical standard for the smaller/larger sized dog, if they can produce numerous specimens of said 'new' breed...more power to them, IMO.

I have a HUGE problem, though, with the current fad of 'designer' breeds. Of Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Puggles, Cavachons, etc. Dogs who are one generation removed from pure breds, who can't possibly be categorized into a specific physical or temperamental label. Dogs who are mutts, mongrels, mixed-breeds, as they don't qualify in any breed description...and can't, as you cannot possibly predict that combining a Poodle and Labrador will positively guarantee the temperament of the Lab and the non-shedding of the Poodle. Or guarantee the breathing ease of the Beagle with the stability of the Pug. And so on. First generation mixes are up for grabs, as any genetic expert will quickly confirm.

Again, as far as genetics go, if you breed a Poodle with bad elbows (patella disorder) to a Golden Retriever with hip dysplasia, there is a very great chance that multiple pups in the litter will have both elbow AND hip problems, so-called 'hybrid vigor' not withstanding.

Honest to God, breeding a Golden to a Poodle does NOT result in a 'hybrid'!!! Breeding a horse to a donkey results in a hybrid...a mule, a sterile animal. Breeding a Quarter Horse to an Arabian results in a mixed breed, 1/2 Quarter, 1/2 Arab!
