Wearing Graduating Gowns And Caps
The practice of wearing graduating gowns and caps originated as early as the 12th century! This tradition originated in Universities located all throughout England. Back then, there were not very many well-established universities so they had their classes inside of a church. In the year 1321, graduation gowns were made the mandatory dress code for academic schools. This is the year that the dress code regarding caps and gowns came about. However, back then the gowns were not made to only be worn at graduation, but also every other day of the whole school year. In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission was formed. This Committee was formed to set a standard for how and when students should wear their gowns. They set a set of codes called the Intercollegiate Codes. These codes slowly began to take affect all over the world, and also were being constantly modified. These codes are still in effect today, but are constantly being modified and changed. It’s sometimes hard to believe that there is a Committee that determines what and how we wear it to graduation ceremonies. This, however, could be a very good thing because without this committee we might still be wearing graduation gowns and caps on a daily basis. I’m sure that we are all content with only having to wear them two or three times in our entire lifetime. So, I suppose that this committee should be around for a long time, so that we are constantly having our standards set. Who knows, maybe one day all of the graduation caps and gowns will disappear! The students have lots of choices for decorating the mortarboards.
Buying Graduation Caps And Gowns In A Right Way
Most of the colleges and high schools require students to wear some color cap & gown to participate in the graduation exercises. Few schools need students to pay the deposit or else buy cap & robe that can be strain on the students & their families. The students who cannot afford the cap & gown is barred from participating in ceremony due to the lack of an academic attire, however donating the old cap & gown will give the student chance to commemorate their accomplishments without any added expense. If school approves the cap and gown, then place them on the hanger & give them to school. If your graduation cap and gown can’t get accepted by the school, then contact the local theater companies. All these organizations are in need of the costumes, and cap and gown is great for the graduation scene. The graduation, whether from the high school and college, is the celebrated event in the American culture. The caps & gowns are rented or else purchased for an event, and, graduates embellish the caps. This endeavor will show the graduate's individuality, and announce the message to family & friends or serve as the beacon so that family members will spot her in sea of the look alike uniforms.

Traditionally, the academic robes like those seen at graduation ceremonies are the remenants of the robes that monks and clergymen would wear in early monestaries. Since these were the center of research and progress before the establishment of dedicated learning institutions such as colleges and universities, it was only natural for academics to adopt a modified version of the clergy robe. For many years these robes were worn daily by academics studying at a university.
While some ancient universities even today wear academic robes daily, or some for a period of time at the opening and closing of a term, nowadays full academic regalia is only worn at graduation ceremonies at most institutions of learning. In fact, the interest in academic robes even at graduation ceremonies has been in resurgance recently since it was viewed as stuffy and too “establishment” to wear formal academic robes by many students and activist groups in the 60s.
