Wrestling or Jiujitsu which is a better building block for MMA?
It seems to me that great wrestlers make a better transition to MMA than do great jiujitsu fighters. You have so many good wrestlers Ortiz, Couture, Liddell (college wrestler), Hammill, Evans, Henderson, Jackson. These guys come in and once they learn to defend against the submissions they are so tough to beat. Unlike jiujitsu fighters who pull guard often wrestlers fight for the top position always. I think wrestling is a better starting foundation than jiujitsu for MMA fighters. What do you all think?
The reason why there are so many good fighters with a background in wrestling is because most of the fighters in the UFC are American. The most popular and competitive combat sport in America is wrestling. So thus most of the good fighters are wrestlers Understand my logic?
Many fighters with a wrestling background have been training this grappling art since a young age. It has helped them develop discipline and athleticism over time. These attribute are what wrestling donates to a fighter. The best aspects you build in this sport is a work ethic. Given that most often in MMA, only simple double legs, singles, and basic throws are used, the technique and skills that wrestling provides for mma are limited.
It is also important to note that pretty much every wrestler who enters the octagon is highly decorated in the sport: DI champions, All-Americans, Olympians ect. Not to say that the practitioners of other arts are not equally decorated.
Now if you are very young, like a freshman in high school or younger, I would suggest wrestling (because of the attributes listed above). But if any older, the skills in BJJ will help you much more.
BJJ technique is rooted directly in MMA. Although there is still some higher level moves in BJJ that are inappropriate outside a grappling tournament, the amount of BJJ skill needed in MMA far exceeds that of wrestling.
You could make the argument that all a wrestler has to do is learn to avoid the submission and he's set. But given the impressive skill of the BJJ fighters today (Noguiera, Shogun, Gonzaga, Penn, ect.) That is not such an easy task. Look at Hughes, he's a great wrestler, but if we take a closer look, we can observe that he saw the need to rise to blackbelt in BJJ. Maybe all the BJJ guys need is to learn a takedown or two? Which tends to be covered in most gyms.
Wrestling skills are great for controlling the pace of the fight, but if you want to finish it on the ground BJJ will have to be learned. And no, it isn't that easy to apply a Kimura from side control against a superior ground fighter, you will end up back in his guard before you can pull it off.
